Group Surf Lesson
Group lessons are great for families, groups of friends, and couples who only have a few hours to dedicate to surfing during their vacation. Our classes have a 7:1 student to instructor ratio and we focus on learning to surf in a safe environment. Even for those who are traveling alone, group surf lessons can provide a great opportunity to meet other travelers/future surfistas – please note that we require a minimum of two people for a group lesson.

The surf lesson takes place at Playa Chaman in the Marino Ballena National Park, and begins with a beach portion where your instructor talks a bit about the national park, goes over basic ocean and surfing safety, explains what makes the beach at the Marino Ballena National Park a good place to learn, and goes over the parts of a surfboard. Next, your instructor will explain and demonstrate techniques for how to carry a surfboard properly and safely. Following that, they will explain and demonstrate the surfboard management and control drill which you will then put into practice by catching white-water waves on your stomach.
After riding some waves and gaining a feel for how to control the surfboard, you’ll head to shore for a drink of freshwater and a 5-minute break. Once the group is ready your instructor will explain the “pop-up” technique for standing on your surfboard, explain how to properly dismount from the surfboard, and go over how to fall safely to reduce the risk of injury. You will then practice popping-up on the sand and finally head back out into the water to attempt standing on the surfboard for the last 20-30 minutes of the lesson.
The topics you will learn during a group surf lesson include (note: these may vary depending on ocean conditions):
I should start by saying that literally every single experience with Bodhi has been incredible. Every instructor and leader at Bodhi is extremely friendly, responsible, and goes above and beyond to ensure the happiness and safety of their participants. At the surf lessons, Spencer and Luis were both incredible instructors. I did a week of classes with these two and I have nothing but positive things to say. Spencer and Luis are both expert surfers with a true gift for teaching.
As someone who has never been super comfortable in the ocean, I felt apprehensive about learning how to surf. Bodhi's week long curriculum is put together so well, with each day building on the skills from the previous day. I have taken surf lessons where instructors merely push you into waves, but this week was so much more than that! I am walking away with the confidence to now rent a board at any beach and apply the skills that I learned with Bodhi. The instructors well all helpful, patient and caring. Thank you Bodhi for helping me find my confidence and learn how to surf!
Yes they taught us to surf, but we learned about the history and wildlife in the National Park, the state of recycling in Costa Rica, and how to respect and give back to the ocean that gave us so much in our 10 days in Costa Rica. I can only imagine what the experience would be like if you spent a week with them and the Bodhi team. My wife, and two girls ages 7 and 9 had been looking forward to Costa Rica for 5 months. Travis and Luis did not disappoint- they were great guides, educators and coaches- we all got up by the end of our lesson. If you are thinking about the southern coast for a holiday, definitely think about Bodhi.
While staying at Bodhi Surf, we had one free day as a break from the surfing and yoga. However, we were fortunate to spend a few hours out in the ocean learning to body surf! The instructors take safety first and are truly passionate about both teaching and surfing, so you know you're in good hands. This experience complemented the surfing perfectly because it allowed me to better understand how to use my body in the water and the mechanics of the waves. Catching a wave using your body is both exhilarating and freeing. I'm not sure when I'll be able to surf next, but I can't wait to body surf next time I'm in the ocean. So happy I did the clinic!
I was lucky enough to experience a Body Surfing lesson with Hannah and Spencer at Bodhi and I thought I knew how to body surf until they showed me the proper technique! It was so AMAZING catching the first wave! I actually screamed because I was PART of the wave! Quite different from anything else I ever experienced! They are incredible teachers!
