Frequently Asked Questions

We will provide all of the basic equipment necessary for surfing, including surfboard, leash, wax, rashguard, and sunscreen. Personal items you might want to bring include a comfortable bathing suit, towel, mask, and rashguard (if you have your own).

Our surf lessons take place at Playa Colonia (locally known as Playa Chaman), which is located within the confines of the Marino Ballena National Park. It is a beautiful, uncrowded beach that is ideal for surfing.

No. The price of your National Park entry fee is included and we will provide your ticket for you.

Playa Chaman consists of a gradually sloping, sandy beach which is ideal for beginners. While surfing has its risks, these risks can be minimized by building ocean awareness and confidence — a key element of our teaching approach.

The waves at Playa Chaman are constantly changing from week to week and even day to day, as they do at any beach, but they typically range from 2 to 4 feet. Gentle-breaking waves and uncrowded surf lineups are the norm.

Bodysurfing is the physical act of riding a wave using only the body as a planing surface; the original and purest form of surfing. Humans have been practicing the art of bodysurfing for centuries, as it is the simplest form of playing in the ocean. For more information about bodysurfing, check out this blog post: https://www.bodhisurfyoga.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-bodysurfing.

Bodysurfing is a crucial tool in the beginner surfer’s repertoire, and offers a completely different and unique connection with the ocean that will ultimately reduce your learning curve when it comes time for board-surfing. Less equipment means less learning steps, more maneuverability, and a deeper connection with the wave.

The most important thing you need to bring for the bodysurf lessons is a tight-fitting swimsuit that will create minimal drag (and will stay on)—similar to what you would wear to swim laps in a pool. Swim fins will be provided for you, but you can certainly bring your own if you already have a pair.

You need to be able to swim at least four lengths of an olympic-size swimming pool (200m) using either a sidestroke or freestyle stroke in order to participate in the bodysurfing lessons. If you are not a strong swimmer, you will spend the week catching whitewater waves in chest-deep water instead of swimming out to catch green waves.

With over 30 years of combined surf instruction experience, our International Surf Association (ISA) Certified instructors excel at providing students with detailed theory in combination with technical skills and physical practice. Additionally, Bodhi Surf + Yoga is the world’s first (and only) Certified B Corporation surf and yoga camp in the world.

Full payment is required minimum 24 hours prior to scheduled lesson time in order to guarantee your spot. We recommend 7 days as we do fill up quickly.

Payments are fully refundable under the following conditions:

  1. Ocean and weather conditions (thunder and/or lightning) do not permit us to run the lessons.
  2. We receive notification of cancellation at least 48 hours prior to scheduled lesson start time.

There is no refund for arriving late or leaving early. In the event of bad weather the surf lesson will be rescheduled (light showers or cloudy skies do not constitute bad weather).

I should start by saying that literally every single experience with Bodhi has been incredible. Every instructor and leader at Bodhi is extremely friendly, responsible, and goes above and beyond to ensure the happiness and safety of their participants. At the surf lessons, Spencer and Luis were both incredible instructors. I did a week of classes with these two and I have nothing but positive things to say. Spencer and Luis are both expert surfers with a true gift for teaching.

I can surf!

As someone who has never been super comfortable in the ocean, I felt apprehensive about learning how to surf. Bodhi's week long curriculum is put together so well, with each day building on the skills from the previous day. I have taken surf lessons where instructors merely push you into waves, but this week was so much more than that! I am walking away with the confidence to now rent a board at any beach and apply the skills that I learned with Bodhi. The instructors well all helpful, patient and caring. Thank you Bodhi for helping me find my confidence and learn how to surf!

Yes - you should book with Bodhi!

Yes they taught us to surf, but we learned about the history and wildlife in the National Park, the state of recycling in Costa Rica, and how to respect and give back to the ocean that gave us so much in our 10 days in Costa Rica. I can only imagine what the experience would be like if you spent a week with them and the Bodhi team. My wife, and two girls ages 7 and 9 had been looking forward to Costa Rica for 5 months. Travis and Luis did not disappoint- they were great guides, educators and coaches- we all got up by the end of our lesson. If you are thinking about the southern coast for a holiday, definitely think about Bodhi.

Body Surfing Clinic is a MUST

While staying at Bodhi Surf, we had one free day as a break from the surfing and yoga. However, we were fortunate to spend a few hours out in the ocean learning to body surf! The instructors take safety first and are truly passionate about both teaching and surfing, so you know you're in good hands. This experience complemented the surfing perfectly because it allowed me to better understand how to use my body in the water and the mechanics of the waves. Catching a wave using your body is both exhilarating and freeing. I'm not sure when I'll be able to surf next, but I can't wait to body surf next time I'm in the ocean. So happy I did the clinic!

Body Surfing like you have never experienced!

I was lucky enough to experience a Body Surfing lesson with Hannah and Spencer at Bodhi and I thought I knew how to body surf until they showed me the proper technique! It was so AMAZING catching the first wave! I actually screamed because I was PART of the wave! Quite different from anything else I ever experienced! They are incredible teachers!
